Q&A session with Nick Hasted
Edition of 200 signed and numbered prints
“To me, ‘Black Dog’ is the antithesis of Rock N Roll. Hard,
heavy, sexual and primal. The sentiment is as old as the beginning of
man and woman and the eternal subject matter of the earliest Blues song.
It’s about obsession, infatuation, lust, frustration, disappointment
and yearning. It’s mostly from a man’s perspective but there would be
no Blues or Rock N Roll if this emotion did not exist between the
sexes.”

Rock & Roll by Kii Arens
“What is more Rock and Roll than groupie sex in your hotel after a show with an actual shark?
The story of Led Zeppelin at the Edgewater is legendary in every form
it’s been told. The hotel boasts it’s added feature of fishing from your
room. Why? Because the Edgewater Hotel, in Seattle, is on the edge of
water.
Legend has it that a roadie caught a shark with John Bonham and things got a lil’ nutty.
Rock on!”

The Battle of Evermore by John Vogl
“‘The Battle of Evermore’ has such rich and illustrative lyrics,
the most difficult part to approaching this piece was choosing what
elements to focus on. I wanted to showcase the battles between light and
dark, and highlight the tension and conflict in the song. It’s one of
my favorite Led Zeppelin songs, and was a thrill to work with.”

Stairway to Heaven by Jermaine Rogers
“What does ‘Stairway To Heaven’ look like? I’ll admit, I’m still
not quite sure: there are as many interpretations for this song as there
are individuals who’ve heard it. For me, it’s a song drenched in
‘duality’. It lyrically defines two paths: the choice to follow some
‘script’ in life, dictated by dogma, tradition, or teaching OR the
option of trusting the inner voice, the ‘humming’ in your head.
I believe that there is energy within each one of us that naturally
attempts to sync up with the pulsing of the universe, the grid
connecting everything and everyone in existence. As a race of beings,
we’ve become so very distracted over the ages that we’ve gradually
forgotten how to ‘hear’ it. I think the song celebrates the option to
‘listen very hard’ & to follow the primal music in your head.
Still, the choice is ours...and the image I created is dominated by
that same aspect of duality. Two paths. You can try to cheat the game
and buy the ‘stairway to heaven’...or you can surrender to the wheel of
fortune and just live it out day by day.”

Misty Mountain Hop by Nate Duval
“I have always been drawn to the lyrics “So I’m packing my bags
for the Misty Mountains where the spirits go now, over the hills where
the spirits fly. “ They not only paint a picture of what was going on
in the park that famed day in the song, but touch on the oft-mentioned
middle-earth interests the guys seem to have had throughout their
illustrious career. I wanted to let my mind run wild and send myself off
to the misty mountains where I was greeted by this very flying spirit.
I modeled our flying friend after the serpents and Dragons Jimmy has
been known to adorn on-stage.”

Four Sticks by Dan Grzeca
“This was a really challenging piece for me to make. The power of
the songs opening riffs, with the relentless rhythms from the entire
band set the pace. Reading how Page and Co. took to creating the song
as an abstract, I latched onto this as I’ve been making prints of
semi-abstract landscapes recently. Taking imagery from the night, and
the woods, the belly of an owl filled with a river in the English
Countryside I hope I conveyed at least a part of what the song brings
out emotionally.”

Going to California by Gary Houston
“There are so many things that conjure up thoughts of California.
There’s an old national lampoon radio show in which Hunter Thompson is
assigned to find the essence of Cali. He drives around the state in a
car with the radio blaring all things Cali, and encounters events
typical to his assignment, and he’s oblivious to it all. Can’t get a
handle on it.
To me, to represent Cali I used the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s not the
Hollywood sign which is L.A. The bridge is a Cali thing, with the fog
and ocean. The stamp border refers to travelling, going from here to
there, not stationary. I used warm colours and built around the yellow
sky. The illustration process was scratch board which is very organic
and in keeping with the California feel. [although i guess you could
argue that southern cali is pretty slick] All seperations are hand cut
with airbrush splatter on rubylith and then each colour is hand pulled.
There are 6 colour passes on this print. ”

When the Levee Breaks by Mike King
The print just moves the action forward from the moment “when” becomes “as”.
A women and remnants of her home and belongings sinking to the bottom of a river.
I added the praying hands in reference to the line “Now, cryin’ won’t
help you, prayin’ won’t do you no good” and also because I thought it
looked cool.”

"This has been months of planning and it’s so close to coming together this Thursday (October 13, 2011).
John Vogl (the Bungaloo) and I bring you “The Greenwich History and Heritage Collection” and “Unfamiliar Objects” respectively. Our shows will debut at the Flood Gallery in London, UK. Both John and I are there now preparing for the show (and drinking alarming amounts of coffee!) with the Flood Gallery team. We’ll both be there on the opening night and John will even be doing live drawing sessions.
“The Greenwich History and Heritage Collection” by John Vogl (commissioned by the Flood Gallery) is a series of four prints (with two variants) depicting different moments, people, and places in Greenwich’s rich history. Greenwich is where the Flood Gallery is located, so John and the Flood Gallery’s efforts are a salute to such a prominent area in the United Kingdom.
“Unfamiliar Objects” is my series of six prints. In addition to those six, I have two art print versions of my Brave New World and Anthem Prints. “Unfamiliar Objects” is my way of communicating simple observations about life through modest machines and whimsical devices that are largely out of use. In addition to prints, I will be offering a T-Shirt based off of one of the prints that will be sold exclusively at the show opening.
The Flood Gallery is the best brick and mortar one gallery and shop for seeing today’s poster and prints artists. The variety is immense and the staff are very sincerely dedicated to posters and prints. When I first walked in, my first impression was that they had work from almost everyone I could think of, framed beautifully and in display bins.
The opening for the show is October 13, 2011 at 7:30 pm. The Gallery is located at 8 Greenwich Market, London SE10 9HZ. Both John and I will be in attendance on the opening night and would love to meet as many people as possible. In addition to our new prints, the gallery boasts some of the best and most sought after posters, and the market will be buzzing with vendor stalls and food. It’s all very exciting.
Both of our series are 18 x 24 prints and are currently available for pre order at the Flood Gallery website and will be for sale at the opening.
Please check out my flickr photoset to see all the prints and more photos."

"The
idea of recording an entire life on film has always had a profound
effect on me. Perhaps at the end, there would be millions of photos.
What if I could only put them onto a single roll of film? What
parameters would I use to decide which moments to discard, which to
keep? The very thought turns my mind into a lifeboat on the ocean, so I
chose the simple life of a butterfly as my test subject."
"Gum
Balls were one of many things I loved as a kid. The bright color and
candy flavor clashed with the reality that soon my cherished treasure
would be a hard and flavorless chunk of rubber in my mouth. On a long
enough timeline and when you stand back far enough, all treasured
moments are essentially a Gum Ball, so fleeting and so small, they might
not have even happened. Despite this, these Gum Ball moments still mean
something to us. They happen and they pass. We could choose to save the
Gum Ball by never chewing on it and keep it forever, but then we'd
never experience it either."
"There isn't a whole lot to say about this one, the idea is clear."
"Being
a person living in a modern metropolis is wonderful, but something gets
lost. With so many cars, signs, buildings, streets, lights, schedules,
phone calls, jobs, meetings, and other distractions, we all become
background noise. Often, I wonder just how much gets lost in the rush to
gain progress and momentum. Truly listening to someone these days means
adjusting one's antenna and tuning the knobs to get the right frequency
for the clearest sound. It means turning off the record player and TV
and computer and anything else that makes noise other than the Radio.
Even when the antenna and knobs are just right, the act of being near
the Radio can cause static."
"This
print builds on the same idea that "Photographic Memories" does. The
View-Master was a staple of my childhood. To my dismay, the only paper
disks I had were store-bought photo synopses of Disney films. I used to
pretend that I could see my future in the View-Master, that each click
would give me a view of a moment farther into things yet to happen. How
nice would that be? Imagine, before beginning your life, to have a
variety of paper disk futures to view which depict choice moments of
different versions of your life, then to choose a favourable version?"
"It's
an art print version of a poster I did for the Ayn Rand novel,
"Anthem". Books and reading have been the primary sculptor of my
ideas, the ideas in this series are no exception. I remember reading Ayn
Rand years ago and while I don't completely agree with her
philosophies, I can't argue that they pushed me to question things."
"It's an art print version of a poster I did for the Aldous Huxley
novel, "Brave New World". Books and reading have been the primary
sculptor of my ideas, the ideas in this series are no exception. The
book, despite being fictional, solidified within me the need to be
independent and to formulate my own ideas. I think it is extremely
appropriate because the city inside the capsule contains elements of
London, as the story of "Brave New World" takes place in London."
Also... just a reminder
The prints are printed by hand on French cover paper stock, measuring 18 x 24" each print is signed and numbered by John in an editions of 35 and 75.
The regular edition is printed using pewter ink, an edition of 75 and priced at £20 - Click here to order
The rarer colour variant is printed using metallic gold ink, an edition of only 35 and priced at £30 - Click here to order
Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, (29 September 1758–21 October 1805) was a British flag officer famous for his service in the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars.
He was noted for his inspirational leadership and superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his several victories, the best known and notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, at the end of which he was shot and killed.
After Nelson's death, his corpse was taken to Greenwich. He lay in state in the Old Royal Naval College for three days, before being taken up river aboard a barge for his funeral at St Paul's Cathedral.
The third and fourth prints in the series will be unveiled at the 'Introducing: Kevin Tong & John Vogl' exhibition starting on October 13th at the Flood Gallery, click here for more details.

Illustrated and hand printed by Denver poster artist John Vogl the four poster series of prints celebrates the history and heritage of our home town of Greenwich.
The first poster in the series is a beautiful illustration of The Old Royal Naval College, the architectural centrepiece of A World Heritage Site in Greenwich, London, The college is described by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation UNESCO as being of “outstanding universal value” and reckoned to be the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles”.
The site is managed by the Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College (Foundation), set up in July 1998 as a Registered Charity to “look after these magnificent buildings and their grounds for the benefit of the nation”. The buildings were originally constructed to serve as the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, now generally known as Greenwich Hospital, which was designed by Christopher Wren, and built between 1696 and 1712. The hospital closed in 1869. Between 1873 and 1998 it was the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
Silk screen printed by hand on French cover paper stock, the print measures 18 x 24" and is signed and numbered edition of 250.

]]>The concept of concert-poster-as-art emerged in the late 60s but dwindled away when music went mass market and stadium rock took hold. Over the past 10 years there has been a resurgence of the form with a whole new breed of talented artists expressing their love of music through beautiful and hard crafted gig posters. The posters are special, collectable yet affordable and are a gateway drug to people wishing to bring more art into their lives and on their walls at home.
The Flood Gallery is run by a small group that are fanatical about this format and our gallery space brings the most focused and unique portal to this world in London.
Our webstore is currently under construction and should be live in the next couple of weeks or so. We will begin by adding work by our featured artists and will slowly be adding more and more work over the coming weeks, so please keep checking back. In the meantime if you would like to visit us in the gallery itself, you can see all the posters we have in stock and see how amazing and vibrant contemporary rock poster art can be.
